Kota Kinabalu Tragedy

     What happened at Mount Kota Kinabalu is indeed a very heart wrecking event. Nineteen lives were taken during the 5.9 magnitude on Friday June 5, 2015. It said that the strong quake struck at a depth of 10km, with its epicentre located 19km from the town of Ranau, and 54km from Kota Kinabalu.  

Apart from the state capital, the tremors were felt in the northern Kudat and Kota Marudu districts, and as far away Beaufort in the south. 

     A full list of 18 deceased victims of the Mount Kinabalu earthquake has been posted in the search and rescue operations room.

      The first two victims brought out from the mountaintop were mountain trainer Robbie Sapinggil, 30, and Singaporean student Peony Wee Ying Ping.

    The largest number of foreigners was from Singapore with one group of 29 Singaporean and international students and eight teachers from Tanjong Katong School on an expedition to Mt Kinabalu. Student Prajesh Dhiman Patel, 12, was listed as being seriously injured.

     Malaysian Mohd Khairuladzuan Abdul Khalid, 39, was earlier included in the list, but was later to have been in the first batch of rescued victims, but his name was not recorded.

      To appease the mountain protector, the 10 western tourists who stripped and urinated on Mount Kinabalu should be fined 10 head of buffalo, according to local customs, says Sabah's chief tribal priest known as Bobolian.

 

     The Bobolian, Tindarama Aman Sirom Simbuna, said on Sunday that the tourists' actions had angered the spirits and guardians of the mountain, which brought about Friday's quake in their rage.

     "According to local beliefs, the spirit of the mountain is very angry," he said.

     He said the victims of this anger were innocent people who had nothing to do with the indecent behaviour of the tourists.

     "The tourists who angered the guardian of the mountain should pay for their mistakes by giving sogit.

     "This fine, called sogit in the native tongue, should be in the form of 10 male or female buffaloes," said Tindarama Aman.

     He also conveyed the condolences of the state's Bobolian community to affected families.

    According to the local beliefs, Mount Kinabalu is the resting place for spirits of the dead before they move on to heaven or hell.

   He said that these roaming spirits came be summoned through Bobolians or Tindarama during rituals called 'menolob'.

    Tindarama Aman also hailed Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan's suggestion for a massive prayer gathering to appease the mountain spirit following the quake that is believed to have left 18 people dead.

What is an IP address?

IP, which stands for Internet Protocol, works like a street address to pinpoint exactly where you are accessing the Internet from. This allows information, like web pages and email, to be delivered to you. Every device (such as a mobile phone, a Wii, a PlayStation console or a computer) that accesses the Internet must have a unique IP address, which is generally provided by an internet service provider. Without an IP address, a device will not be able to get to internet to send and receive information.

An IP address is a unique number that identifies the location of a computer or device on a network. The current IP address version is called IPv4 and a typical public IP address looks like this: 24.128.21.12.

What is IPv6?

IPv6 is the abbreviation for Internet Protocol version 6. We are currently on Internet Protocol version 4, or IPv4, but IPv6 will be the next generation protocol for Internet communication. Not only will IPv6 provide a much larger address space, but it will also provide features such as improved routing traffic and better security.

What does an IPv6 address look like?

An IPv6 address is much longer than an IPv4 address and looks something like 24da:db8:ac10:fe01:2aa:ff:fe00:56ab.

Here are a few characteristics of IPv6:

IPv6 contains a combination of both letters and numbers (0 through 9, and A through F).

IPv6 consists of 32 hexadecimal characters in an address and is 128 bits in length.

An IPv6 address could look like this: fd98:d3e2:f0fe:0:54ae:34ff:fecc:892, compared to an IPV4 address that looks like this: 24.128.21.12.

What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6 addresses?

An IPv4 address is a series of 4 numbers separated by periods. An example of an IPv4 address is 192.0.2.15.

An IPv6 address is a series of 8 numbers separated by colons. An example of an IPv6 address is 2001:db8:ac10:fe01:2aa:00ff:fe00:56ab.

Why do we need IPv6?

The Internet has experienced a phenomenal increase of devices accessing the Internet. Because of this increase, IPv4 addresses are running out. The solution is for IPv6 to accommodate this increased demand by providing a much larger address space, along with improved traffic routing and better security.

Some of the major advantages of IPv6 are:

1.       Larger IP address space: IPv6 has 128-bit address space or 4 times more address bits compared to IPv4's 32-bit address space. This large address space will provide enough address space for many decades to come.

2.       Better security: IPv6 includes security in the underlying protocol. For example, encryption of packets (ESP: Encapsulated Security Payload) and authentication of the sender of packets (AH: Authentication Header).

3.       Consideration to real time: To implement better support for real-time traffic (such as videoconference), IPv6 includes a flow label mechanism so routers can more easily recognize where to send information.

4.       Plug and play: IPv6 includes plug and play, which is easier for novice users to connect their machines to the network. Essentially, configuration will happen automatically.

5.       Better optimization: IPv6 takes the best of what made IPv4 successful and gets rid of minor flaws and unused features.

Why can’t IPv4 just be expanded?

There were many proposals regarding how to solve the problem with the availability of IPv4. The Internet community agreed that the approach of IPv6 is the best.

If we run out of IPv4 addresses, will that mean I will not be able to connect to the Internet?

No, you will still be able to connect to the Internet as you normally do.

Will I need to purchase new equipment to support IPv6?

Your computer probably already supports IPv6, but you should upgrade to the latest version of your operating system and browser. Most network-capable consumer electronics don’t use IPv6 yet, but may with a future software or firmware update. 

Will mobile and wireless devices work on IPv6?

Yes. Mobile and wireless devices will work with IPv6.

Is there any way for me to check my IPv6 readiness?

Yes. But call your internet service provider.

How To Run Multiple Yahoo Messenger Simultaneously

There are times that you need to have two or more yahoo messengers at the same time. Here are the steps on how to run multiple messengers simultaneously:

1. Click start and type regedit in the search box for Windows 7 or search regedit for Windows 8.

2. Go to this path: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\yahoo\pager\Test. Then, on the right pane, right click on the registry editor and select New, then create a new DWORD registry value.

3. Right click Plural and choose modify.

4. Name the new registry key as Plural, and assign it the value of 1 (decimal).

How To Temporarily Downgrade IE9 to IE8

1.       Click Tools then choose F12 developer tools.

2.        In the pop up window, click browser mode and select Explorer 8.

How To Downgrade IE 11 to IE 8

Mary Jane Veloso Execution Postponed

Defying intense pressure from the international community, the government executed eight death row prisoners early on Wednesday on Nusakambangan prison island near Cilacap in Central Java.

"We've carried out the executions," said an Attorney General’s Office (AGO) official, talking to the press on condition of anonymity.

The eight were Indonesian Zainal Abidin, Australians Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, Brazilian Rodrigo Gularte, Nigerians Sylvester Obiekwe Nwolise, Raheem Agbaje Salami and Okwudili Oyatanze, Ghanaian Martin Anderson.

Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso of the Philippines was spared after a woman who allegedly recruited her to act as a drug courier gave himself up to police in the Philippines on Tuesday.

"The executions were carried out at 12:30 a.m.," Suhendro Putro, funeral director with the Javanese Christian Church (GKJ) in Cilacap, said in a short message service.

AGO spokesman Tony Spontana said the government had agreed to the final requests fielded by two Australian death-row convicts for their bodies to be flown to Australia for burial.

A Cilacap Police officer said that after the executions, prayers were said for each person according to their respective religion. "The executions went well, without any disruptions," he said.

The AGO stated that the executions had been carried out after it had heard all eight convicts’ final requests.

The execution was the second round after the first was carried out on Jan. 18, during which six inmates from Indonesia, the Netherlands, Brazil, Nigeria, Vietnam and Malawi were killed by firing squad. (ren)

FCC Fines AT&T $25 Million for Privacy Breach

     The Federal Communications Commission fined AT&T $25 million for failing to protect the personal information, including Social Security numbers, of its customers, the agency said on Wednesday. The penalty is the largest the F.C.C. has ever issued for data security and privacy violations.

     Employees at AT&T call centers in Mexico, Colombia and the Philippines were found to have stolen the names and full or partial Social Security numbers of about 280,000 of the wireless carrier’s customers in the United States. The workers sold that information to third parties.

     In Mexico, the employees were provided specific phone numbers by a third party who went by the alias El Pelón, referring to a bald man in Spanish. From November 2013 to April 2014, the F.C.C. said, the employees sold El Pelón the names and other information tied to those phone numbers. AT&T said it terminated its contract with the Mexican call center in September.

     F.C.C. officials said the parties who bought the data appeared to have been trafficking stolen cellphones they sought to activate. They added that the personal information that employees had taken without authorization was used to submit 290,803 handset unlock requests for mobile phones through AT&T’s website. Agency officials speculated that the third parties could have been seeking to resell those phones in the United States or abroad.

“We’ve changed our policies and strengthened our operations,” AT&T said in a statement. “While any misuse of customer information is serious, we have no reason to believe that the information was used for identity theft or financial fraud against our customers.”

     The F.C.C. said it learned of the privacy violations after AT&T reported the activity in Mexico to the California attorney general last year; the agency began investigating the breach in May.

     The additional breaches in Colombia and the Philippines were not uncovered until this year, when AT&T reported them to the F.C.C. Those investigations continue, the agency said. It declined to say whether other wireless carriers had relationships with the call centers in question.

     “The commission cannot — and will not — stand idly by when a carrier’s lax data-security practices expose the personal information of hundreds of thousands,” Tom Wheeler, chairman of the F.C.C., said in a statement Wednesday.

     In addition to the fine, the settlement requires AT&T to notify all affected customers and provide credit-monitoring services. While AT&T still has a relationship with the call centers in Colombia and the Philippines, all the implicated employees have been dismissed, the company and the F.C.C. said, and new measures have been enacted at those call centers to mask private data like Social Security numbers.

     “Customers trust that their phone company will zealously guard access to sensitive personal information in customer records,” said Travis LeBlanc, chief of the agency’s enforcement bureau. “We hope that all companies will look to this agreement as guidance.”

Lazada Online Shopping

It has been a long time since I blogged. But I want to share my experience to whoever is going to read this. I hope this serve as a precaution.

I am not into high end smart phones that's why I stick to "old fashioned" phones because I only need it to call and send SMS. I work here in Malaysia in an IT company. When our company changed location which is far from where I live. I have to take a cab to go to work. Sometimes, it is hard to go to work especially if there are a lot of us trying to get a taxi. So I was forced to buy a smartphone so that I can install a very useful app called "myteksi". This app will help me find a cab without waiting for almost an hour.

And so I ordered Samsung Galaxy Y Neo. The first order was cancelled because of unknown reason. I called customer service and they initiated a refund which until now I have not received.

Then I ordered again and paid almost the same amount. Almost, because they gave 20RM voucher as compensation. It's sad that I did not learn my lesson. I ordered the same product. Again, I paid using my card because cash on delivery is not an option. I should have taken the cancellation of the order as an omen. But I went through with the second order. It says in the website, it should include the phone, battery, headset, USB, adaptor and user manual.

But guess what I received. It has missing components i.e. the USB cable and headset. I called customer service again. They wanted me to return the whole item and I have to wait for several days before they can replace it.

 

Oh no, not again! I asked if they can simply send those missing items to my office. The support person named Zach said, I really have to return the whole package. I thought online shopping is for convenience. There is a reason why I addressed it to the office. I am very busy. I can't wait for someone all the time.

I guess I have to stop shopping from Lazada. This also happened in the lazada.com.ph. I purchased a phone as a gift way back in April, 2014. I addressed it to my brother in law. I paid it using paypal. The delivery guy tried to get payment from my brother in law. My brother-in-law refused to pay and so the guy took back the phone with him. I called customer service several times. Take note, I spent more than the value of the phone just to keep calling Lazada customer service in the Philippines which finally after 3 months, they said somebody has accepted the phone and signed it. They showed me a screenshot of acceptance slip with signature which my brother said, it is not his signature. Finally, I gave up the fight anyway, it was just less than one grand. The phone call is costing me more.

I suggest for everyone who reads this to be very careful. If you can find time, shop physically. Do not rely on online shopping. And as for me. Stop wasting money!!! I should learn from this mistake. This should never happen again.

Listen up, boys. And girls - repeat after me.
My beauty is not for your enjoyment. I did not get up in the morning and make myself pretty so you can ogle me and fit me into your sexual fantasies. My make-up is not there so you can view me like centerfolds whose pages are stuck together from the output of your adolescent frustration.
The way I fixed my hair or sculpted my brows is not so you can judge me according to your standards and put me on a scale of attractiveness or virtue. I have my own, and I hold my own value as a woman.
My body is not for you to touch without my consent, no matter how much of it you see. I am not wearing a short skirt to attract you, or a low neckline to tempt you. My fitted shirt is not an invitation for your hands that have no right to my body. I am my own person, and though some of you may capture my heart, you'll never own me. So please don't act like you do.
Don't act like I'm made up for you, like I seek your valuation or your judgment because of how I dressed today. Don't tell me I deserved that cat call or snide remark just because you can't compliment a woman politely. If you are rejected, or turned down, it doesn't mean I deserve to be called a slut. A woman never deserves to be raped because of how much skin you see.
Dear man, you are not an animal with a jackhammer penis who must drill into orifices or else you'll die. You are a thinking, feeling creature with human logic, empathy, and emotions. You'd never rape your sister or your mother no matter how much of their body you see, so is it too much to expect the same courtesy for me?
Be insulted when you hear that a girl deserved to be assaulted because she was drunk or dressed provocatively. Be enraged when you're told a rapist couldn't help himself because the woman "asked for it." You know the difference between seduction and violation. You know the difference between loving me and forcing yourself on me.
Agreeing that by their actions women want to be violated means that you believe men have no judgment and will rape everything they see. Your mother raised you better than that. If you have doubts, try treating her similarly. Chances are she'll remind you how to treat a woman properly.
Believe it or not, we want to look pretty for ourselves. We make ourselves presentable for own confidence and self-worth. We accentuate our faces and our bodies to feel good and because we feel beautiful. You do not hold the key to our beauty. We do not base our beauty on how many men are staring at us. We do not feel prettier if we hear more rude comments on the street.
We appreciate a kind compliment such as, "You look nice," but do not care for comments on our body parts, necklines, or hem lengths. Imagine how it would feel if a man commented on how much of your rear end or your chest he can see. It's creepy and violating, isn't it?

We resent being told that we must look better, get our hair fixed, or lose weight so we can attract boys. Because we were raised as girls who were told these things, we promise to stop the cycle with our daughters. Let's stop praising our daughters only for their looks, outfits and accessories. Instead, let's comment on their skills and intelligence and ask them what exciting projects they're working on in school.
Let's tell our sons and daughters that the women on EDSA's billboards are not real, that they're airbrushed, nipped and tucked, chemically treated, or surgically altered. Let's tell them that a real woman is like their mommy, auntie, or lola.
Real women have curves, and blemishes, and stretch marks, and body hair. Real women don't use skin whiteners. Real women are proud of what they see in the mirror in the morning. Real women want to be healthy, not skinny.
Most importantly - let's tell our children that real men love real women who aren't hopelessly chasing the unreachable goal of the thin, flawless, and ageless woman at whatever cost. Real women have wrinkles because they've lived. Real women aren't emaciated because they like to eat. And real men enjoy the company of real women, not that of mannequins who have invested so much in their looks that they've forgotten to think.
Maybe then we can raise a generation of men who value women as more than objects to present or reasons to gloat. Maybe men will choose women as partners for life, instead of just bearers of their children and keepers of their homes.
And maybe we can raise women to believe that they were born with beauty, and that it is a gift that does not decrease nor diminish depending on the number of people who agree. Maybe they'll feel pride in the first sight of their faces and bodies in the mirror instead of a desire to cover things up, to change their features, be thinner, lighter-skinned, brighter-eyed, and fuller-lipped.
How great would it be to look at our reflection and see everything that's right, instead of everything that's wrong?Maybe then our women will walk out into a world where they don't crave the approval of others, or have to judge their appearance against a fashion magazine.
